From Delays to Dance Floors: An Honest Carnival Horizon Review
My take on the Carnival Horizon ~ A Rocky Start, but an Unforgettable Crew!
Our sailing on the Carnival Horizon didn’t exactly glide out of the gate. Between ship and engine issues, embarkation delays, and a departure that ran hours late, it was less “set sail with cheer,” more “Grab a drink, don’t watch the clock, ’cause unfortunately we’re just chillin’ at the dock” To add salt to the wonderful sea air, we missed our Grand Cayman port entirely. Not exactly the dream kickoff anyone pictures when they’re holding a fruity drink and wearing brand-new cruise sandals.
But here’s the plot twist… The crew turned lemons into the finest cruise-ship lemonade.
First up, our room steward, Phelan. If there were Olympic medals for hospitality, this lady would be standing on the podium with a gold medal around her neck. Always smiling, always attentive, and somehow magically appearing right when we needed something. Truly one of those people who makes you feel like you’re the only guest on the ship, even though there are literally thousands of others wandering around in flip-flops.
Then there’s Chef François, who deserves a standing ovation for how he took care of my daughter’s gluten-free needs. Every single morning, he personally prepared her breakfast with such care and kindness that it felt less like dining service and more like being looked after by a culinary guardian angel. Knowing she was safe, seen, and well fed made a huge difference for the trip.
We had early dining, and with a group of approximately 35 people, you’d think dinner would resemble a small wedding reception every night. Somehow, Adi, our waiter, handled it like a seasoned conductor leading an orchestra. Orders right, timing perfect, and not once did he look like he was considering jumping overboard. Calm, organized, and always cheerful, he made every meal feel effortless. This is a huge feat given how needy our group can be!
And then… the entertainment team. Absolute legends!
Cruise Director Tyler Mehan deserves his own marquee. Funny, upbeat, and endlessly energetic, he kept spirits high even when the cruise didn’t go according to plan. His positivity was contagious in the best way, and you could feel the entire ship feeding off his energy. His team was just as great. Kendra, aka “Kevin,” Allie, and Jose brought nonstop laughs and good vibes, proving that sometimes the real destination is the fun you have onboard.

We must talk about the moment that will live rent-free in my memory forever…
Bingo & The crickets.
I wish I remembered the host’s name, but I will never forget the sight of a grown adult enthusiastically eating and SHARING edible crickets in front of a room full of horrified yet deeply entertained passengers. It was one of those moments where you laugh, gag a little, and then laugh harder. Equal parts hilarious and traumatic. I may never look at bingo the same way again. 🤮
In the end, yes, the Horizon had a rough start. We missed a port. Plans changed. Expectations had to be adjusted. But what never wavered was the heart of the crew. Their dedication, kindness, and commitment to making sure guests still had an amazing experience turned what could have been a disappointing trip into a truly memorable one.
The ship may have hit a few bumps in the water, but the people onboard carried this cruise across the finish line with style, humor, and a whole lot of heart. And honestly, that’s what made this sailing one we’ll always remember.
A Little Slice of Spa Heaven: Room 11237
I stayed in Spa Room 11237, and if you’re the kind of traveler who loves being close to the action and close to relaxation, this room is a dream. Its location near Lido Deck made grabbing coffee, ice cream, or a quick bite ridiculously convenient. Basically, snacks were always within striking distance, which is the true measure of a great cabin.
One of the best perks was the included access to the thermal spa area in the Cloud 9 Spa. I may not have the exact fancy name of the salt rooms and heated loungers, but I can confidently say it felt like stepping into a calm little oasis while the rest of the ship buzzed along. Floating between steam, warmth, and total quiet was the perfect reset after busy sea days.

Now, an honesty moment… In rougher seas, you could feel a slight rock in this location. Nothing dramatic, it wasn’t bouncing you out of your bed level, just enough to remind you that yes, you are in fact cruising on the ocean. Most of the time, though, it was barely noticeable and never took away from the overall experience.
The room itself was spacious, clean, and incredibly comfortable. The bed was cozy, storage was plentiful, and the layout worked well even with all our cruise clutter. The bathroom felt a notch above standard with upgraded spa-branded shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, which made every shower feel just a little more luxurious. I may or may not have brought a bottle home… purely for research purposes, of course.
And piece d’resistance was the balcony. Perfect for morning coffee, evening sunsets, and those quiet moments when you just want to watch the ocean roll by and pretend you don’t have responsibilities when you return.

From Karaoke to Coffee on the Deck: Life Onboard the Horizon
One of my favorite parts of this cruise wasn’t just where we went, but everything we did in between. The Carnival Horizon is basically a floating playground for grown-ups, and over the week, I made it my personal mission to sample as much of the fun as possible.
Let’s start with karaoke. Whether you’re brave, bold, or just slightly overconfident after a cocktail, karaoke night is pure entertainment. Some people came to sing. Others came to perform. And the rest of us came to cheer, laugh, and silently thank the brave souls who took the mic before we did. I even got a hug & a blessing at sea from a lovely lady who sang gospel!
Then there was the Havana Bar. If you haven’t experienced salsa dancing on a cruise ship, you’re missing out on one of life’s great joys. The music, the energy, the rhythm in the room, the way everyone suddenly believes they’re a professional dancer after two songs. It didn’t matter if you had moves or just enthusiasm, the vibe was contagious and the memories were golden.
For my adventurous side, I tackled the SkyRide. The SkyRide was equal parts thrilling and hilarious, especially when you realize you’re pedaling a little bike high above the deck while other guests wave up at you like you’re in a parade you didn’t sign up for. A perfect mix of fun and that moment halfway through as gravity grabs you that you ask yourself, “Why did I think this was a good idea?” In the end, it was totally worth it!!
When I wasn’t chasing thrills or dancing the night away at one of their many parties, I found my happy place in the coffee shop. I stopped in so often that the sweet barista started to recognize me and my order. I had clearly reached “frequent sipper elite status”, if only in my mind. There’s something magical about grabbing your morning coffee and heading out to the deck, watching the water stretch endlessly ahead, the ship gently gliding forward, and the world feeling wonderfully quiet before the day kicks into full gear.
Between the shows, trivia, live music, comedy, deck parties, and all the little pop-up activities happening around the ship, there was never a dull moment. Whether you wanted high-energy fun or laid-back relaxation, the Horizon made it easy to choose your own adventure every single day.
By the end of the week, I realized something. A cruise isn’t just about the ports. It’s about the laughter in the karaoke lounge, the rhythm in the Havana Bar, the wind on your face during the SkyRide, meeting new friends, quality time with loved ones and the simple joy of sipping coffee while the ocean rolls by. Those are the moments that turn a trip into a story worth telling.
☕Sip Smarter: My Take on the Drink Package🍹
Now let’s talk about the drink package, because this is always a hot cruise topic. I’ll be honest I’m not a heavy alcohol drinker. I’m not the “start with mimosas and end with margaritas” type. I’m more of a “sip here, hydrate there, coffee everywhere” traveler.
That said, the drink package still worked in my favor… just in a slightly unexpected way.
I may not have been loading up on cocktails all day, but I absolutely made up for it with sparkling flavored waters, specialty coffees, and a few fun alcoholic drinks that usually add up faster than you think. Lattes in the morning, cappuccinos in the afternoon, maybe an iced coffee before a show. Toss in flavored seltzers, bottled water, and the occasional cocktail, and suddenly that package earned its keep!
It was honestly mentally freeing not having to think twice about ordering something. Want a fancy coffee? Sure. Need another sparkling water? Why not? Feeling like a fruity drink without the buzz? Done. The best part wasn’t the alcohol, it was the no-stress sipping. Just sign the receipts, no mental math, no “should I really order this?” Just enjoy and move on with your day.
So if you’re not a big drinker but you love good coffee, flavored waters, and having options at your fingertips, don’t count the drink package out. You might be surprised how easily it pays for itself… even without routinely seeing the bottom of a fishbowl margarita.
